The end of two eras today as we see the final chapters of not only
Getter, but the
Survival remake as well. Both modern re-imaginings which I've worked on for a good three years now, both series which I come away with mixed feelings about.
My second oldest ongoing project,
Getter ends as something of a disappoint for me. While Shimizu and Shimoguchi are certainly competent artists (massive shoulders aside), and some of the month by month happenings were intriguing, I can't help but feel that the series never really became it's own. A lot of it just felt like needless references (like, why bring up Go, or Dragon, if they're only going to be in a couple of panels) with much of the actual meat (e.g. the multi universe stuff) just being pushed to one side. Not to mention the rather anticlimactic ending, where so shortly after we emerged into reality, everything was settled with one fairly brief fight. Oh well.
Thanks as ever go to my editor, Nady, as well as to the guy running Random Raws, whom I nabbed the first few chapters from. The
English releases are up to about volume three now, which are well worth the buy if you want something physical on your shelf (not to mention a competent TL). Meanwhile Shimizu and Shimoguchi have already put up a teaser for their next series, which'll be dragon related or something, though I doubt I'll be bothering with it.

Survival meanwhile was also something which I come away less than pleased with, namely as it felt like it fizzled out towards the end. Miyagawa's modern take was amusing enough at times, and the big plot change from the original was curious, but I must admit to finding this whole end volume rather aimless, with a lot of plot points being outright dropped, or simply covered up (e.g. Masaki's group patching things up with the Americans in the space of a few pages, everything to do with Satoru's escape from the camp in volume four). Admittedly this was true enough for the original as well, and given the afterword Miyagwa might've had hopes for a longer serialisation, but we can only judge what we're given I guess, and it does feel like it comes up short.

Miyagawa hasn't done anything since finishing it, but we've obviously
