Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 89 [End] & Survival Ch. 111 [End]

And so here we are. What better way to end one longstanding project, than by ending another one at the same time!

To start with then, we have the 89th and final chapter of Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw

Chainsaw was something I first found out about back with volume nine. By the time I'd flicked through volume two and seen the Getter 2 homage I was sold, and since then the series has been a non-stop roller-coaster of insanity and wonderful, gratuitous horror.

At heart I think what I enjoyed most about the series (and indeed Mikamoto's stuff full stop) is that there's never a dull moment. Even some of the most vaunted series (manga or otherwise) will on occasion have those filler sections, that is those parts which you feel don't really add anything enjoyment wise. Chainsaw isn't like that. I could open a chapter at random now and still end up with a smile on my face by the end of it. Yet this sense of amusement is far from simply being a sort of crude passion for B movie-esque adventures (though that's of course a large part of why I enjoy the manga so), there's also just a lot of little, often quite clever touches which I feel help to always keep the work engaging (a favourite will always be right in the very first chapter, where you can see a tiny, off focus Nero stumbling across the wall to get into one of her early victim's houses).

Having finished Chainsaw I do intend to carry on with Mikamoto's other works. My editor mentioned elsewhere that we've been looking to do his new serialisation, and I'd also be keen on at least starting his one-shot collections in the foreseeable future.

If you enjoyed the series I would very much recommend you pick up the volumes for it. They're cheap and easy to import via sites like Amazon, or digitally via sites like eBookJapan.

Last, but by no means least I have to thank elemhunter for his help with the raws, and my long suffering editor/QC Nady for all his help.

And then we have the 111th and final chapter of Survival (different printings have different chapter numbers, which is I assume why MAL lists 119 chapter total).

In contrast to ChainsawSurvival was something I must admit I wasn't instantly keen on (go back to my initial release post for perhaps the least enthusiastic project start ever). I've no idea quite when it hit me that it was something special, but much like Chainsaw it's now a series I have amongst my favourites.

When it comes to Survival I think what really works is that it's something which, well, actually sticks to being about survival. Survival stories have a weird sort of tendency to go off the rails after about the halfway point (all it along it was aliens being an irritatingly common occurrence.), yet even into the 90s Satoru is still concerned a lot of the time with simply getting something to eat. Alongside this, there's also quite a dark, bleak element to the whole tale. Indeed Satoru spends the vast majority of the tale alone, anyone who he does run across up to about the halfway point ends up dead (I can't help but feel that Takao's final decision to off Satoru's dad also feeds into this bleakness) and it's only really come the final few mini-arcs that we see Satoru fit in with others. This is all quite unusual. There are plenty of grim tales in which humanity is wiped out and the MC sort of struggles along, but there are few in which they are so hopelessly cut off from other humans. In fact I'd say that even the ever enigmatic Duke Togo has a less solitary existence than Satoru. That Satoru's greatest threat to survival might well be said to be loneliness itself is perhaps something many would outright never realise, and the sort of added depth which I really enjoy about the series.

In writing out this long eulogy I suppose there's some irony in the fact that Survival won't technically be done. I've still the remake to do, which I should hopefully be able to start up again sometime soon, alongside a separate little bonus of sorts, though I won't mention anymore on that here. I would also like to continue with Takao's stuff (it's pretty insane that this'll be the first work of his entirely scanlated in English). While still TLing the odd Golgo chapter I wouldn't mind starting on something like Breakdown, though that wouldn't be for a while yet (alongside the aforementioned new series by Mikamoto there's one, perhaps two other things I'm keen to pick up as is, though I'll talk about them some other time).

Much like with Chainsaw, if you enjoyed Survival then I do encourage you to buy the volumes. There's a million and one physical versions available on sites Amazon, as well as digital versions on sites like eBookJapan.

One final shout out also has to go again to my editor/QC Nady. Were it not for him I imagine we'd still be stuck on the first tank, with about a million and one more bizarre spelling/grammar errors.

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 85 & Kentou Ankokuden Cestvs Ch. LXIX

Four left!!!!!!!

From here on I'll pretty much be focusing solely on Chainsaw and Survival given we're on the final stretch for both. This'll mean more or less no releases of anything else, though only Getter/Kaiten/Yuzumori will be affected in any meaningful sense.

Five left!!!!!!

My editor's away this week which has meant I've not really been able to get many of my normal projects done. I did spend the last two days TLing an 80 page Golgo chapter though, and I'm also TL checking a separate Golgo chapter for someone else, so you can look forward to those in the near future if you're a Duke Togo fan. I also managed to get raws for two random new things, but won't be able to start them until my editor's back.

So before anyone asks, yes Ejima did retroactively go back and make this a split chapter, and yes this part is only six pages. No I don't know why it's so short (especially given it's a week late as is).

The next chapter/part/single page should be out in two weeks, so we'll see if that's a bit lengthier.

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 78 & Kaiten-One Ch. 5

Alright here's another double.

First up we've some Chainsaw, only 11 chapters remain.

And then we've the latest Kaiten chapter. The romanization in the title includes a hyphen so I'll be including one too from now on (the title's probably also meant to be all caps too but I won't bother going that far).

With this we're now caught up, next chapter's due out in a week.

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 75.5

Alright so here's the bonus chapter from volume 11 of Chainsaw which I'd skipped previously. As mentioned before this was just a little extra thing which Mikamoto did to help tie in with the movie's release (he actually published these sorts of things after each chapter of Satanister but stopped for whatever reason when he started Chainsaw). It's not amazingly insightful but hey, a (bonus) chapter's a (bonus) chapter.

Speaking of Mikamoto his latest series started in today's issue of Comic Beam. So far it's exactly what you could probably imagine Mikamoto putting out (the MC is also the spitting image of Geeko).

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 76, Kentou Ankokuden Cestvs Ch. LXII & Survival Ch. 98

So it turns out this will actually be my 300th post on this blog. I dunno whether or not that's something to be happy about but in celebration here's a surprise triple release (it'll also mark three chapters in one week for Chainsaw/Survival, so threes all round).

First up then we've the start of the penultimate volume of Chainsaw. I've still the little bonus chapter from the previous volume to do but most of it's just Mikamoto shilling for the film, so it's not too important.

Then we've the next chapter of Cestvs. There are now three chapters left for the volume if you wanna try and keep this post's theme going.

And last but not least we've a chapter of Survival.

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 75 & Somali to Mori no Kami-sama Ch. 19

And here's another double bill.

First up we've chapter 75 of Chainsaw. While this is the final actual chapter of volume 11 there's still a little bonus thing I've yet to translate (think of it as 75.5) so we're not quite onto volume 12 yet.

And then we've chapter 19 of Somali, which is a pretty dumb chapter all things considered.

Personal gripes aside we've now come to the end of the third volume, meaning we've caught up to what's been published in Japan. There are still three uncollected chapters remaining for which I do have the raws. They're fairly low quality though (yay for web raws) so we'll have to see if I can be bothered to work with them, else it''ll be a wait until November or something for the fourth volume's release.

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 74 & Kentou Ankokuden Cestvs Ch. LXI

So somewhat unrelated news to start with, but it was announced earlier today that Seven Seas would be officially localising Devolution, with the first volume being out May 2018. This is obviously fantastic news and, if Seven Seas' previous acquisitions are anything to go by, probably means they'll be releasing the original Getter Robo at some point in the near future too.

With that in mind I will, at least for the time being, continue on releasing Devolution as I've done up till now. While I'm rather wary of doing something which has been licensed I can also appreciate that a good 10~ or so new chapters will have been released by the time the first volume comes out in English, and that it'll be a good few years before things are going to be fully caught up. Obviously if I get hit by a DMCA or something I'll stop, but for the time being I don't intend to do much differently. I will however stop putting direct downloads for the chapters up, so you'll need to directly rip them from Batoto or something if you care for that sort of thing. It also means I likely won't get around to redoing anything from tank scans, but I'd not exactly done much on that front anyway.

Big chunks of text aside here's the next chapter of Chainsaw, something I don't imagine ever being licensed in English. Only one (and a half) chapters left for the volume.

And then here's the next chapter of Cestvs, another title which'll forever elude English licensing. We're over halfway through the volume for this now too.

As one final note I realised I made a mistake in the dates, and that we're now two Yuzumori chapters behind, so that's something I'll try and remedy soon(ish).

Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Ch. 72 & Survival Ch. 94

It's been a while (good grief does Stormblood have a lot of quests) but here's another double release to help keep things churning over.

First up we've chapter 72 of Chainsaw, in which a few old faces reappear.

It was also announced recently that Mikamoto will be starting a new series in next month's issue of Comic Beam. I'd like to work on it but we'll have to see how things go, I'm not entirely sure that I need another monthly to work on after all...

And then we've chapter 94 of Survival, getting ever closer to the big 100!

Up next'll probably be Cestvs and/or Somali.
