Gekikou Kamen Ch. 48-50, Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 117-118 & Shinkalion: Dive the World Ch. 2

Been slipping into bad habits again and letting a bunch of chapters stack up.

Gekikou is now up to date again though.

As is Cestvs.

Active Raid: Kidou Kyoushuushitsu Dai Hachigakari Ch. 5, Gekikou Kamen Ch. 42-44 & Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 106-116

It's been a quiet few months for me, in part due to work, in part due to my own bad habits, but, having faffed around with a bunch of releases for a long time (in some cases literal years) I figured I'd make one great push to try and clear out some of my backlog and hopefully ensure that releases are more smooth going forward. As ever though, we'll have to see (especially as work is still getting in my way).

First up then we've an Active Raid chapter, which brings us just about to the halfway point.

Then we've the latest three chapters of Gekikou. These mark the end of the current arc and the start of what appears like it'll be a Mari related arc. They also should mark the end of volume five (while I've listed 44 as part of it on MangaDex it may slip into volume six, but I won't know for sure until five is out at the end of the month).

The series also seems to be taking a break next issue, so 45 won't be out until the end of the month.

And then we've the latest 11 chapters of Cestvs, going back two or so years. These chapters see through to the end of the Gideon fight as well as the aftermath. They also makeup the end of volume 11 as well as a fair chunk of volume 12.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 105

Somehow managed to miss the entirety of 2022 with Cestvs but we are now, at least for the immediate future, back. And by that I mean the next four chapters that I have raws for. How things will go when I'm done with them is anyone's guess, though as I've mentioned before Cestvs is the sort of series that you can leave for a year and only end up with 80~ pages to do, so it tends to get deprioritised (that and the raws aren't as readily available).

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 104

It's New Year's Eve and what better way to welcome in the New Year than how we started it, with a chapter of Cestvs. I'd actually endeavoured to get this chapter done on time (i.e. two months ago) but wasn't able to sort out proper raws until a few days back. A good lesson I suppose in actually trying. It does however mean that there's "only" a week to go until 105, assuming there's no sudden break or anything.

As a whole 2021's been a fairly scant year for releases. While I did really enjoy The Moon (and was able to finally get the one Gundam series out) a lot of my other projects have rather badly stalled (although it seems someone finished off Search and Destroy a few months back so that's one less worry). Hopefully 2022 will be better on that front, I'm certainly looking to be more aggressive with both new and old series.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 102-103

Now here's something we've not had in a while. The long delay has mostly been due to me focusing on The Moon, though Wazarai did miss an issue back in May. At the time it wasn't clear exactly why, although with hindsight it now seems likely that it was due to the unfortunate passing of Kentarou Miura (the pair had after all known one another since high school).

During that long break we did however have the pleasure of the Cestvs anime adaptation, which is something perhaps best forgotten. If nothing else I suppose I'm thankful that it seems to have been more or less ignored full stop, rather than ending up a meme like Ex-Arm. Exactly why they thought adapting 160~ odd chapters in 11 episodes was a good idea is anyone's guess, but it seems the staff behind the Muv-Luv Alternative anime didn't get the message either...

At any rate next chapter's out in half a month's time. All the chapters should also now be up on MangaDex too.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 101

Would you look at that. For the first time in forever we're actually up to date on Cestvs, and we've still a whole month to go until 102. It must be a miracle. Somewhat coincidentally volume 10 was also released today (which does contain up to this chapter), though I've not yet bought it to see if Kamose's hometown has been corrected though no corrections were made to Kamose's hometown so I guess he's just from Thebes now.

With 102 not out until May it means that this'll be the final chapter before the anime starts. Fingers crossed of course, but I imagine I might well be writing some rather scathing comments with next chapter's release.

Having caught back up it does also mean that I should, at least in theory, be able to get some other series out. We'll have to see though.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 100

Sometimes it really does feel like the universe is out to get me. Having slowly worked on this chapter for a good month or so I finally got around to finishing it off, only to find MangaDex down again. Oh well, I'll update with a link when (or perhaps that should be if) the site is back up. Who knows, maybe I'll have 101 (which is, of course, already out now) done by then too.

Still, with a month or so until the anime airs Hakusensha have begun to step up their promotional work for the series. The latest issue of Young Animal Zero included some details on the voice cast, alongside an interview with Cestvs' VA. Curiously, amongst the characters listed were Sabina and Emden which presumably means we're at least getting the Pompeii stuff, though quite how that's going to fit in remains to be seen (I imagine it won't be good). They're also going to be re-serialising the first volume of the manga in the main Young Animal magazine. While I'm doubtful it'll have much impact it is sort of nice to see (it is also amusing to compare the magazine's line up now to what it was when Cestvs first began).

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 99

It's been a fairly quiet month, but at the last minute here's some Cestvs to tide things over alongside what'll probably be the longest post I ever make for the series, given a fair few things have been announced in the five or so months since I last released any chapters.

First, and perhaps most importantly, Cestvs has moved homes (again) going from Manga Park (a website) to Young Animal Zero (a new(ish) magazine which is published every other month). This move in and of itself isn't particularly surprising (it had been announced that Cestvs would move to a new magazine prior to it ending up on Manga Park), the fact that it's happening now however is (Young Animal Zero's been going for around a year at this point). While a move to a bi-monthly magazine like Zero would normally be cause for alarm, it will actually be an improvement given how few chapters we got last year (assuming I guess that no issues are skipped). It also means I'll now know exactly when a new chapter is out, rather than having to check a website every week, which is nice for me.

Next, we have the slightly more dubious news that Cestvs is, after 20 or so years of serialisation, finally getting an anime. The initial PV shows that the series will, at least for the fights, be fairly CG reliant. CG anime doesn't exactly have the best of reputations but I always figured it was a given for a series like Cestvs and there's a (probably quite low) chance it ends up actually looking good. What's more disconcerting however is the fact that the adaptation seems to be taking from both parts of the series, with the PV showing what looks like one of the earlier fights from part two (at the very least Cestvs seems older, and I can't recall the circular, wooden arena appearing anywhere else). Given it's only going to be 12 episodes adapting the tournament from part two would in and of itself be a challenge, let alone 20+ volumes worth of content. In short, I'm expecting a rushed mess.

If nothing else the anime announcement has been beneficial in that earlier volumes of the series will seemingly be getting reprints. Or at least, the digital versions of part one have all been updated to match part two's cover scheme (arguably for the worse), while Amazon has a listing for some sort of triple pack containing the first three volumes. In a perfect world I'd use this as a chance to rescan volumes one and two (which I used public raws for back in the day), but I doubt it'll happen. I have however been tidying up some of the earlier translations whenever the mood takes me.

Last, but by no means least, volume 10 of the series has been dated for a March release. Even assuming it includes chapter 101 (which would be published the same month), it'd still come out at only nine chapters total making it the shortest volume of part two. Though given it's been a year and a half since volume nine I can see why they'd be keen to get it out regardless.

At any rate chapter 100 is already out, and I should probably get to TLing it before 101 is out in a month's time.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 94-98

I said last time we'd soon see the return of an old friend and, in a surprising instance of me actually keeping my word, I'm here today with the latest five chapters of Cestvs.

At well over a year it's obviously been far too long coming (there's a certain irony in being so slow with releases after having finally caught up) but when you consider the fact that in this time only five new chapters have actually come out it's hard not to see why I've been rather laid-back about things.

To offer a little context Cestvs has, from around volume 10 of the original series, had a rather rocky serialisation, often missing numerous issues at a time. Since 2018 it's been published online but things haven't really improved: seven chapters were published in 2017, 10 in 2018 (four of which were after the move online), five in 2019, and thus far in 2020 we've had a grand total of three.

At this point it seems unlikely we'll get a chapter for August either, meaning at best there'd be four more chapters for the year. I'm personally expecting two, who knows. What I can say though is that it's not particularly motivating to work on something which may or may not have another chapter for however many months. Still, I will endeavour not to be as slow in future, though it might make some sense to keep things in batches going forward anyway (e.g. release all of this current fight at once). We'll see I guess, whatever the case we are all caught up for the what'll likely be the next few months.

One final point, which I did mention in the chapter itself, is Kamose's hometown. Way back in chapter 21 it was given as Memphis, while it's now Thebes. This is presumably an error on Wazarai's part, though whether or not it'll be corrected in the eventual volume release is anyone's guess. In the event it does get changed I'll go back and correct my version, but the volume won't be out for a year or so at the earliest.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 91-93

And here we are. After a total of 247 chapters, 24 volumes, and over three years of effort involving who knows how many hours Cestvs is all caught up. While a grand achievement in its own right it does however mean we're now stuck waiting for new chapters which won't exactly be a regular thing; for a long time now the series has had a rather irregular serialisation and you should expect it to be a case of waiting months, at the minimum, between chapters from hereon (to give you an idea 91 came out February 15th, 92 came out April 12th while 93 came out June 6th).

Assuming each of the remaining fights take up about a volume's worth of content then the series should have around four years of serialisation left (granted I would expect the latter fights to be longer than what we've had thus far), though that's with the big assumption that it does simply end with Cestvs winning the tournament and gaining his freedom (which would, to be honest, a bit of a letdown as there are a whole range of plot points which wouldn't be resolved). Nothing we can do at this point but wait and see however.

For now though I can finally get back to my many other languishing projects, and maybe some new stuff now that what might well be my longest project is for the most part dealt with.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 85-87

Okay so my 100% wasn't quite accurate and we're still pushing on with Cestvs. If nothing else there are now only six chapters left, at which point I'll (in theory) have to release something else.

Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 78-80

I swear I'll get to some other series soon.

In possibly related news Hakusensha announced that they'll be launching a new magazine, Young Animal Zero, in the coming months. This is presumably what became of Young Animal Resistance, a new magazine they were meant to launch back at the start of the year and where Cestvs was due to move after Young Animal Arashi folded. Considering it's still labelled as a fighting seinen magazine there's a good chance that Cestvs will end up there, though it'd further slow thing down as it's only planned to be published every other month.

Would've been nice to have got 72 done as well today to finish off the volume, but alas, didn't quite make it in time.

This week'll see the release of the ninth volume, chapter 93 (which should mark the start of volume 10) also came out a few days ago, so it's an unusually busy time for Cestvs.

Getter Robo Devolution: Uchuu Saigo no 3-punkan Ch. 37, Kendo Shitouden Cestvs Ch. 66 & Survival: Shounen S no Kiroku Ch. 86

The stars have aligned today to allow for a triple release; truly shocking stuff.

Starting things is the penultimate Getter chapter. Final one should be out in just under two weeks.

Page 20 is kind of an awkward bit to get right, as the Japanese makes use of two separate pronouns (watashi and ore) for each character which isn't something English really makes use of. Oh well.

Then we've some more Roman African boxing.
